Prayer Emphasis | July 2021
July Prayer Emphasis: Unity
Last month’s topic was all about relationships, so this month’s prayer emphasis fits perfectly; Unity. What is unity and how does it relate to the church, community and why do we pray specifically for it?
On the last night of Jesus’s life, he prayed a prayer that should be the banner for all who believe:
John 17:20-21:
I pray for these followers, but I am also praying for all those who will believe in me because of their teaching. Father, I pray that they can be one. As you are in me and I am in you, I pray that they can also be one in us. Then the world will believe that you sent me”
In this final prayer, He prayed for unity. Not for happiness, or success- but UNITY. He prayed that we would love one another. Unity matters to God. How will the world believe that Jesus was sent? It won’t be by solving differences, but by loving one another even when we don’t align. Unity creates belief.
When the church in Rome was debating whether to eat meat offered to idols, what did Paul do? Did he tell them to break off and only meet with those that agreed? Did he say to debate until all agree? No, on the contrary, he said, “Christ accepted you, so you should accept each other, which will bring glory to God” (Romans 15:7 NCV).
God is asking us as believers to not do anything He has not already done. He has accepted us, warts, blemishes and all. He tolerates me, and even ask me to call Him Father. He chose ME- He Chose YOU! As Pastor Joey reminded us several weeks ago- We are a Royal Priesthood. Do we view each other as He views us? As Chosen? As a beloved brother or sister?
When all the questions can not be answered, God’s kingdom has a common ground: The cleansing, all sufficient sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Won’t you join us this month in praying for Unity in the body, in relationship with believers? Has this past year caused you to fall out of community with other believers? Or even with God?
Topics to pray over:
Unity in the Body, Marriages, Families, Government (can you imagine?), for all believers in the world.
Here are some simple ways to pray this month using P-R-A-Y:
Pause/Praise: Pause and recognize the blessing of a community of believers and how it accomplishes God’s kingdom work. Praise Him for this provision
Repent: Where have you lost sight of Gods Kingdom in regards to community and unity and inserted yours? Where have you closed off other believers because maybe they have offended you? What do you/I need to let God have so that He can restore it?
Ask: What are you longing for in unity? What is missing? Maybe you are lonely and realize you are out of community- Ask God to place those people in your lives and in the lives of others that can carry out His plan of unity with in the body.
Yield: Pray and humbly follow the Holy Spirits prompting in regards to your role with unity with the body.
Verses to pray over one another and the body regarding Unity:
“For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.” (Romans 12:4-5 NASB)
“Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:1-3 NASB)
“So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.” (Colossians 3: 12-13 NASB)
“Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation.” (Romans 12:16 NASB)
Verse Prayer of Praise:
“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For brothers to dwell together in unity!
It is like the precious oil upon the head,
Coming down upon the beard,
Even Aaron’s beard,
Coming down upon the edge of his robes.
It is like the dew of Hermon
Coming down upon the mountains of Zion;
For there the Lord commanded the blessing—life forever.” (Psalm 133 NASB)
